Origin: Caucasus
Date: Last quarter of the 19th century
Dimensions: 295 × 126 cm
Description:
This rare Gendje rug features an exceptional diagonal lattice of amulets, each enclosed within octagons—a protective motif seldom used as a full allover design in this region. The polychrome octagon main border, crisp and intricately drawn, is a hallmark of early Gendje weaving. Its fine detailing—seen in the delicate separators between the octagons and the complete ram-horn forms—signals a pre-1900 date, before such elements became simplified in later examples.
The palette is beautifully balanced, entirely natural, and includes touches of early purple dye. A refined, unusually complete example, it brings together symbolism, rare drawing, and the unmistakable character of 19th-century Gendje craftsmanship.
